LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 39 Texas Tech men's tennis team opened its season with an impressive 5-1 win over No. 73 UNLV.
With cold and wet weather conditions, the doubles portion of the match was not played so the day began with singles.
The Red Raiders claimed straight-set wins in the first five positions as 25th-ranked Raony Carvalho defeated Mehdi Bouras, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), at No. 1. At the No. 2 position, No. 40 Gonzalo Escobar won over No. 102 Luca Barlocchi, 6-3, 7-6 (4), while Rafael Garcia beat Attila Toth, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3.
At the final three positions, Tech won at No. 4 as Andre Stabile was victorious over Matthew Kunkel, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 5 as Vitor Manzini defeated Johannes Markel, 6-2, 6-4. The Red Raiders' lone loss was at the No. 6 spot as Raphael Pfister fell to Kasper Konyves, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"This was a first good match for us especially since it was cold and windy," said head coach Tim Siegel. "Our players beat a very good team at their place. It was a very good first win for us."
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday as they take on No. 42 San Diego State at 4 p.m. CST.
