LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings have been released and the Texas Tech men's tennis team enters the spring season ranked 39th in the country, while two singles players and two doubles teams are also ranked.
Sophomores Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar are ranked No. 25 and 40, respectively in singles, while Carvalho and sophomore Rafael Garcia are 19th in doubles, and Escobar and freshman Andre Stabile are the 35th-ranked tandem.
"I don't put too much stock in the rankings in January," said head coach Tim Siegel. "However, it is good for our players individually because it shows that they had a good fall."
During the fall tournaments, Carvalho posted at 7-4 singles record after defeating a couple top 20 players and advanced to the finals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships. Carvalho also competed in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. He and Garcia finished the fall with a 4-1 doubles mark after advancing to the finals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
Escobar went 5-2 in singles play last fall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Baylor Intercollegiate. He and Stabile played in the finals of the Baylor Intercollegiate doubles draw and finished the fall with a 4-2 record.
The Red Raiders open their spring season on Jan. 22 at UNLV and will also take on San Diego State on Jan. 23 in Las Vegas.
