LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team is heading toward the end of its fall season, and throughout the remainder of the semester Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Kevin Whitehead (C - 6-2, 205 - S/R -Jr./2L - Tacoma, Wash./Franklin Pierce)
Kevin Whitehead batted .309 while playing in 37 games - including 17 starts behind the plate - for Texas Tech during his sophomore season in 2010. Used primarily as one of the top two catchers for the Red Raiders last season, Whitehead also showed power offensively (10 extra-base hits - four homers) while not committing an error behind the plate.
In fact, Whitehead threw out 35 percent of would-be base stealers, which lead the team.
At the plate, Whitehead batted .324 in 16 games against nationally-ranked opponents and was among team leaders hitting .347 in games played at Dan Law Field.
Whitehead led the team last season batting .432(19-for-44) with runners on base and he was the team's most productive pinch hitter with three base hits in seven pinch-hit at-bats (.429).
"Whitey had a good year for us last year, a really good year," head coach Dan Spencer said. "He played a lot for us last year behind the plate. We are looking for big things from him. It's Kevin's turn to be the guy (behind the plate). His experience is going to help him."
In addition, Whitehead and returning Freshman All-American Barrett Barnes were the only two Red Raiders last season that had over a .530 slugging percentage and a .440 on-base percentage.
