LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas State scored seven of its 13 runs with two outs and pushed Texas Tech's losing streak to five games with a 13-7 win over the Red Raiders in front of 2,023 fans at Dan Law Field on Tuesday evening.
Tech falls to 8-10 on the season while Texas State improves to 9-6 and has won its last four contests.
The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of wild pitches by Bobcat starter Matt Steiner. Steiner gave up a one-out walk to Jamodrick McGruder and a double to Joey Kenworthy and then allowed both to score on wild pitches.
Tech's early lead didn't last long as the Bobcats pounded Tech starter Louis Head in the top of the second to the tune of four runs on four hits and Texas State took a 4-2 lead.
Sophomore catcher Kevin Whitehead evened things up for the Red Raiders in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to right field. The home run was his second of the year and scored Barrett Barnes who reached after being hit by Texas State reliever Fielding Pittman.
Just when the Red Raiders seemed to have the momentum swinging it way, the Bobcats squashed it by putting up three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead.
Texas Tech cut the Bobcat lead to 10-7 with two runs in the eighth but gave up three more in the ninth.
Colt Farrar (0-1) took the loss for Texas Tech after giving up three runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Mitchell Pitts (1-0) earned the win for Texas Tech after holding the Red Raiders to just one run over 2 1/3 innings.
Texas Tech must regroup in a hurry as the Red Raiders open Big 12 play this weekend in College Station against No. 23 Texas A&M. First pitch on Friday night at Olson Field is set for 6:35 p.m.
