No. 18 Red Raiders Head to HEB Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - After jumping 14 spots in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 18, the Texas Tech men's tennis team heads to Corpus Christi, Texas, to defend its title at the HEB Tournament of Champions Classic, March 5-6, at the HEB Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Tech, the two-time defending HEB Tournament of Champions Classic winners, is one of eight teams in the tournament and faces Louisiana-Lafayette on Fri., March 5, at 9 a.m. The Red Raiders (9-1) will either face No. 64 Western Michigan or South Alabama at 4 p.m., with the final match to be played on Sat., March 6. The opponent and time for Saturday's match will depend on the outcome of Friday's matches.
Other teams competing in the tournament include: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, DePaul, Middle Tennessee State and No. 23 BYU.
Also in the latest ITA rankings, sophomore Raony Carvalho jumped to No. 12 in singles, while sophomore Gonzalo Escobar went to No. 58. Tech's top two doubles teams are also ranked as Carvalho and sophomore Rafael Garcia are No. 23 and Escobar and freshman Andre Stabile are No. 39.
Entering the tournament, Carvalho and Escobar have a combined record of 16-2 at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
The Red Raiders are currently on a seven-match winning streak after upsetting then No. 25 Arizona last Friday and beating then No. 49 Denver on Sunday.
