LUBBOCK, Texas - The first day of the HEB Tournament of Champions Classic got underway today in Corpus Christi, Texas, as the No. 18 Texas Tech men's tennis team won its opening match, 4-0, over Louisiana-Lafayette at the HEB Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Tech (10-1) won the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The No. 3 duo of Vitor Manzini and David Pace got the first win, 8-0, over Robert Voss and Tomasz Krzyszkowski, while the 23rd-ranked tandem of Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia beat Carlin Murray and Yanick Mandl, 8-4, at No. 1. The No. 2 team, 39th-ranked Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile were up 7-4 when their match was stopped.
The Red Raiders then went on to claim three-straight singles matches against Louisiana-Lafayette (2-8) to clinch the victory. David Gonzalez, who saw action for the first time his dislocating his elbow the first of January, gave Tech a 2-0 lead as he defeated Voss, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. Pfister then put the Red Raiders up 3-0 as he dropped Neil Schneider, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5. Giving Tech the win was 58th-ranked Escobar, as he downed Javier Pulgar, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. The remaining the singles matches were halted after Tech clinched the win.
Tech now faces No. 64 Western Michigan at 4 p.m. today with the winner advancing to the championship match on Saturday at 12 p.m., with loser playing for third place at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
