
Tech to Host Elite Discus Throw Exhibition

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will host some of the top American discus throwers in an Elite Discus Throw open event that will be held at the Terry & Linda Fuller throws field Fri., April 1 at 2 p.m.
The women's competition will include Becky Breisch, Gia Lewis-Smallwood, Aretha Hill Thurmond and Stephanie Brown Trafton.
Trafton is the top name on the list as she is the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist in the women's discus. She ended the 2008 season ranked No. 1 in the world. She was the first U.S. gold medalist in the discus since 1932.
Breisch is the 2010 USA Outdoor discus champion and 2007 USA Outdoor runner-up. She was a 2005 NCAA Champion in the discus (where???) and made three consecutive US World Championship teams from 2005-2009.
Hill Thurmond is a three-time Olympian and a three-time U.S. Champion in the women's discus. Her personal-best mark is 216'-1" (65.86M) thrown in 2004.
The men's competition will include Jarred Rome, Texas Tech's Julian Wruck and one of Tech's strength and conditioning coaches, Jason Young.
Young, a two-time All-American while at Tech, was the 2010 U.S. Championships runner-up in the discus. His best mark from last year was a throw of 229'-4" (69.90M).
Wruck earned his first All-America honor last season placing third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Red Raider leads the NCAA currently with a throw of 197'-2" (60.10M).
Rome was the US Outdoor Champion in 2004 US Outdoor Champions and has twice been the US Outdoor runner-up in 2005 and 2009. He has placed third at the US Outdoor Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2010.
