AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Tech track & field program won titles in the men's 400M hurdles and the second-straight women's distance medley relay on the final day of the Texas Relays.
"It was a great day," head coach Wes Kittley said after the meet. "We had some fantastic performance. Omo being No. 2 in the NCAA in the 110M hurdles and Shade in the pole vault were great performances. I am really happy for the distance medley relay and they were ecstatic about the victory. I feel we are starting to turn the corner and we will see a lot of good things in the month of April."
The Tech hurdle crew started the day on the right foot. Jamele Mason and Bryce Brown were in an impressive field in the 400M university final that included USC All-American Reggie Wyatt and two-time NCAA Champion in the 400M hurdles Jeshua Anderson from Washington State.
The race started out with Mason getting out in the first 200M and taking an early lead. The wind was a factor on the backstretch and allowed Brown to make his move with 200M to go. Brown was able to take the lead with 10-meters left and beat Mason. Brown ran a 50.08 to take the title while Mason finished in a 50.30 for second place.
It is Tech's second Texas Relays title in the 400M hurdles. Greg Rolle won the first won in 1982 running a 50.19. It also breaks Anderson's streak of three victories.
The women's distance medley relay continued its dominance at the Texas Relays. For the second-straight year and fourth in the last five years the Lady Raiders crossed the line in first place. Devin Bailey, Meshawn Graham, Kearci Jobe and Caroline Jepleting ran the race in an 11:29.34.
Shade Weygandt raised the standard for Tech women's pole vault. The sophomore cleared a school record and a personal-best mark of 14'-7.25" (4.45M). Weygandt breaks her previous record of 14'-2.75" (4.34M) set last year at the Big 12 Championships. Her mark moves her up to No. 2 in the NCAA.
The hurdle crew nearly pulled off double victory in the 110M hurdles and 400M hurdles. Omo Osaghae dived at the line to try and out lean LSU's Barrett Nugent but was too late. Nungent won the race with a wind-aided 13.19 while Osaghae crossed the line in a wind-aided 13.22. Brandon Tucker was sixth in a 13.86 with Shane Brathwaite finishing in seventh in 13.94.
Osaghae's wind-aided 13.22 is the sixth-fastest collegiate time under any condition and it lowers his previous personal best of 13.29.
Kelsey Lloyd ran a new personal best in the women's 100M hurdles. In a very fast heat, the senior ran a wind-aided 13.16 for seventh place. It lowers her previous season best of 13.25.
Kyal Meyers set a new personal-best mark in only his second outdoor meet of the season. The freshman cleared 17'-6.50" (5.35M) to place seventh. The mark puts him tied for third place in the NCAA and the top freshman.
Terra Evans placed ninth in the women's invitational 100M and ran an 11.31. It is the fifth-fastest time of her career.
Kelly Closse threw a season best in the shot put. Placing seventh, the junior threw a mark of 51'-9" (15.77M).
The women's 4x100M relay of Erica Alexander, Terra Evans, Candace Jackson and Taylor Evans placed seventh with their 44.29. Texas A&M won the event with a 42.87
The women's 4x400M relay placed eighth in the university final. Alexander, Jackson, Terra Evans and Taylor Evans ran a 3:39.25.
The men's 4x400M relay of Gil Roberts, Mason, Brathwaite and Brown ran a season best of 3:05.08 to place sixth. It is the fastest time since 2009.
