LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field program had two athletes named recipients of the prestigious Dr. Gerald Lage award for academic excellence. The award is the highest academic honor given by the Big 12 Conference.
Both senior Devin Bailey and junior Ifeatu Okafor were named recipients of the award by the Big 12 on Thursday.
"I'm just very proud that they are both representing the women's track and field program," head coach Wes Kittley said. "Both of them have very difficult curriculums in Biology. I'm very proud of Devin. I've personally coached her and had the opportunity to know her for the last four years. She is one of the most dedicated persons in the classroom and always takes what she does very seriously.
"Ifeatu is always the person that gets the most points in community service, and it's just the type of person that she is. She is very dedicated and serious about her degree."
A total of 60 athletes from the Big 12 were named recipients.
To be eligible to receive the award student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while also maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. Honorees for the award can only be recognized once and should have 100 hours or eared credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
The Dr. Gerald Lage award is presented in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State University Faculty Athletics Representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. Lage was the chairman on three occasions.
Bailey and Okafor will be recognized publicly at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships in Kansas City next week.
