TUCSON, Arizona - The Texas Tech track and field team completed practice Tuesday morning at the University of Arizona in preparation for its first outdoor meet of the season. Tech will compete this weekend in the Willie Williams Classic to officially begin the 2012 outdoor season.
Texas Tech is anxiously awaiting the start of the 2012 outdoor season, as the program will return the services of two key athletes in Gil Roberts and Shade Weygandt.
Roberts returns after winning a gold medal at the IAAF World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey as the anchor of U.S. 4x400 relay team. He also won a gold medal at the U.S. Indoor Championships in the 400 meter dash.
During the 2011 outdoor season, Weygandt garnered two wins in the pole vault and vaulted a personal-best 14'-7.25 at the Texas Relays. Meanwhile she was the 2010 Big 12 indoor pole vault champion and was named the Outstanding Freshman of the Year.
Texas Tech ended its 2012 indoor season by garnering nine All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. Both the women's 4x400 relay team and Bryce Lamb brought home first-team honors.
Tech will begin competition in the Willie Williams Classic Friday and continue through Saturday.
