Texas Tech opens its outdoor season in Tucson, Ariz. this weekend by competing in the Willie Williams Classic.

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Texas Tech track and field team will officially begin its 2012 outdoor season Friday by competing in the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona.
The meet is set to begin Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium on the University of Arizona campus.Tech spent two days training in Tucson this week in preparations for the onset of the outdoor season.
The squad is coming off of an indoor season that produced nine All-American honors including two first team All-American honors. Junior long jumper Bryce Lamb along with the women's 4x400 relay team both garnered first team All-American status at the NCAA Indoor Championships last week.
Katie Grimes (60 meter hurdles), Kelly Closse (weight throw, shot put) and Kyal Meyers (pole vault) each garnered second team All-American status. With the onset of the outdoor season, the team will welcome back the services of several key athletes including Gil Roberts and Shade Weygandt.
Roberts returns after earning a gold medal at both the U.S. and World Championships. Meanwhile Weygandt adds depth to the Lady Raiders pole vault as the Mansfield, Texas native was named 2010 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, and vaulted a personal-best 14'-7.25" at the Texas Relays last season.
