Red Raiders, Lady Raiders Finish Fifth at Big 12 Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The No. 3 Red Raiders and No. 6 Lady Raiders each finished fifth overall at the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Championships Sunday at R. V. Christian Track Complex on the K-State campus.
After three days of action, the Red Raiders finished with 66 points overall while the Lady Raiders finished with 71 - just one point behind fourth-place Baylor. Texas A&M took home the men's conference championship with 150 points, while Texas placed first overall among the women with 139 points.
Sophomore indoor All-American Kyal Meyers opened Sunday by tying for second place in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 5.31 meters (17'-5.00"). Kyle Wait (Kansas State), Hayden Clark (Texas) and Meyers each missed attempts at 5.41 meters (17'-9.00") and Wait won the competition based on prior misses.
Texas Tech found success throughout the meet in the hurdle events with four athletes placing in the top-six in Sunday's finals. Senior Shane Brathwaite placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.46. The time was the sixth-fastest time in Big 12 Championships history and met the Olympic Qualifying `A' Standard. Junior Katie Grimes placed second in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 13.00. Nwokey followed in fourth place with a time 13.44.
Jamele Mason later placed second in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 49.60. Mason also placed sixth in the finals of the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.02. Rose Tanui earned a second place finish in the women's 5,000 meter run with a personal best time of 16:03.42. Teammate Caroline Jepleting also earned a second place finish in the finals of the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:20.17. Jepleting qualified for the finals of both the 800 meter run and the 1,500 meter run on Saturday.
A pair of freshmen put on strong performances in the field events. Avril McGhee finished fourth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.62 meters (41'-5.00"). Jacorian Duffield later finished fifth in the men's high jump. Duffield cleared the bar at 2.11 meters (6'-11.00").
The women's 4x100 relay team, which entered the meet ranked No. 10 in the country, placed third overall to earn six points with a time of 43.71. The time broke the R.V. Christian Track Complex record of 43:95 set in 2005 and was just off their season-best time of 43.53.
Texas Tech now has its eyes set on the NCAA Regionals in Austin, Texas set to be held May 24-26.
