LUBBOCK, Texas - A total of 13 Texas Tech student-athletes officially earned All-American status on Tuesday as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The announcement comes after the program completed competition at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium June 6-9 where the men's team earned its third-consecutive top-20 finish.
"I'm extremely proud," head coach Wes Kittley said. "It's just another long line of All-Americans that we have been so fortunate to have in the past few years and this class was no exception. There was a lot of great talent and a lot of seniors. I'm just proud to see them end the year that way."
Shane Brathwaite (110 meter hurdles), Jamele Mason (400 meter hurdles) and Gil Roberts (400 meters) earned first team honors on the men's team, while Precious Nwokey (heptathlon) and members of the Lady Raider 4x100 relay garnered first team status on the women's team. The All-American Lady Raider 4x100 relay is comprised of Erica Alexander, Taylor Evans, Candace Jackson and Terra Evans.
Taylor Evans also earned second team honors in both the 4x400 relay and the 200 meter dash.
The 4x400 relay ran a season-best time of 3:32.17 to finish fourth in their heat during the preliminaries. Evans finishes her career as a nine-time All-American at Tech.
"I'm so proud of the way she finished her senior season," Kittley said. "She had some of her best this spring."
Roberts meanwhile finishes his career as a six-time All-American at Tech. "We were just so fortunate to land one of the greatest quarter-milers certainly for us and in the country," Kittley said of Roberts. "He has had a great history here and has a lot ahead of him. I'm just very proud of the person that he has become and of course what he has done for Texas Tech. He is going to be a great ambassador for us in the future."
Mason was the runner up in the 400 meter hurdles Friday with a school record time of 48.89. Gil Roberts finished third in the men's 400 meters while Precious Nwokey broke the school record in the heptathlon for the third time during the 2012 season with a total of 5,734 points. She finished seventh overall.
Mason finishes his career at Tech as a four-time All-American. The men's 4x100 relay team earned second team honors with a time of 39.92 to finish 15th overall in the preliminaries.
Katie Grimes earned second team honors in the 100 meter hurdles after earning second team honors during the indoor season in the 60 meter hurdles. Grimes ran a time of 13.25 in the preliminaries to finish fifth in her heat.
Kyal Meyers earned second team honors in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 5.30 meters (17'-4.50") on his first attempt and finishing 10th overall. He also earned second team honors during the 2012 indoor season.
