IRVING, Texas -- Texas Tech seniors JaCorian Duffield and Cierra White have been named the Big 12 Indoor Male and Female Athletes of the Week, following their performances at the Texas A&M Quadrangular.
This marks the first time in program history that the Red Raiders have won both awards in a single week. Tech swept the outdoor awards on May 9, 2012. The last time a team swept the indoor awards was Feb. 12, 2014.
"This is a great and well-deserved honor for both JaCorian and Cierra," Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley said. "They both had incredible days in College Station this weekend and are having exactly the start to the season we were looking for. They both work so hard and are great leaders for our team. They are great examples of what it means to be a Red Raider."
Duffield's jump of 2.28m/7-5.75, which he cleared on his first attempt, didn't just break his own school and meet record, it also vaulted him into a tie for the top mark in the NCAA, and put him into a tie for the No. 7 indoor mark in the world.
This is the second indoor Big 12 Athlete of the Week award for Duffield in his career.
As for White, aside from placing third in both the 60 meter dash and 4 x 400 meter relay, she sped down the track in the 200 meter dash, clocking a personal-best and school record time of 23.18, which not only ranks second in the NCAA, but also the world.
White becomes just the fourth Lady Raider to win this award in the indoor season, joining Tori Polk, Sally Kipyego and teammate Le'Tristan Pledger, who won the award last week.
This is only the second time in program history that the Tech women have won this award in consecutive weeks, the other time being Jan. 23 and Jan. 30, 2007, when Sally Kipyego won the award in back-to-back weeks.
The Red Raiders will be in action this weekend, Jan. 29-31, at the Masked Rider Open, in Lubbock.
