Eric Gutierrez Named Big 12 Player of the Week

Gutierrez matches a school record earning his third career Big 12 Player of the Week recognition.
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior first baseman Eric Gutierrez (Mission, Texas) led the No. 5 Red Raiders to a series sweep over San Francisco on opening weekend, and today was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.
It marks the third career Big 12 Player of the Week honor for Gutierrez, which ties a school record by three other Red Raider All-Americans, including Roger Kieschnick (2006-08), Cameron Blair (2004-05) and Josh Bard (1997-99).
Gutierrez started the season on a tear batting .750 (9-for-12) with seven runs, three doubles, four RBI and seven walks without striking out while reaching base safely in 16-of-19 plate appearances (.842 on-base percentage).
Gutierrez hit safely in all four games of the San Francisco series while posting three multi-hit games, including a career-high four-hit performance in the series finale.
He went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI in the opener, and then scored three runs going 2-for-3 with two walks and a double in game two of the series.
Gutierrez posted three walks going 1-for-2 in game three with two runs and a double. He went 4-for-4 with three RBI and an intentional walk in the fourth game of the series.
Gutierrez and the Red Raiders will be back in action at home tomorrow, Feb. 17 hosting Nevada for both teams' first midweek game of the season with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
