
Red Raiders Fall To No. 24 USF, 4-2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Texas Tech battled to the end, but came up short, as No. 24 South Florida outlasted the Red Raiders, 4-2, in the semifinals of the 67th Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Saturday.
"Another unbelievable college tennis match," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "We played our heart out. It was so close. I was really proud of our effort."
With the match tied, 2-2, Felipe Soares was serving for match point, leading 6-5 in the third set. At the same time, Francisco Zambon was at 6-6 in a tiebreaker in the third set. Zambon was two points away from securing the third point for the Red Raiders.
But No. 22 Roberto Cid battled back to top No. 35 Soares, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 1. Justin Robert fought back to edge Zambon, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 to win the match, 4-2.
The day started with doubles, as the duo of Ignacio Gonzalez and Cid defeated Connor Curry and Alex Sendegeya, 6-1, at No. 3. The No. 58 tandem of Oliver Pramming and Roberts then upset No. 22 Soares and Hugo Dojas at No. 1, 6-4, to take the doubles point.
Sendegeya tied the score, 1-1, when the freshman dropped Gonzalez at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0. USF answered when Sasha Gozun upset Dojas, 6-2, 7-6. Jolan Cailleau then evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 over Pramming.
The Red Raiders will face No. 35 Clemson on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic third place match.
