SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas Tech junior Kimmy Hill improved her first round score with an even par 72 in the second round on Saturday to help the Lady Raiders remain in second place heading into Sunday's final round of the Big 12 Championship at The Dominion Country Club.
No. 39 Tech (289-294--583) sits at 6-over par and trails No. 26 Baylor (282-291--573) by 10 strokes and is one shot clear of No. 11 Oklahoma State (291-293--584). The three teams have separated themselves from the rest of the field after 36 holes. Iowa State is in fourth at 14 over followed by TCU (+15) and Texas (+20).
The Lady Raiders once again had to deal with a one hour weather delay but started off hot on the first six holes Saturday regardless. Sarah Brown birdied the first hole after a close approach and Hill followed her three-putt bogey on the first with birdies on the second, third and fifth holes to get to 2-under par.
Brown, Hill, Lauren Mason and Stephanie Bertelsen were 4 under as a team through the first six holes which narrowed Baylor's lead to just one stroke momentarily.
Then things took a turn the other way. Tech played holes seven through 12 at 8 over as Brown and Gabby Barker doubled three holes while Hill and Bertelsen gave back three strokes, allowing Baylor to extend its lead.
But the Lady Raiders did find hope on the final five holes, playing them at 4-under. Barker birdied 16 and 17 and nearly got a third-straight to drop on 18 en route to a 3-over 75 along with Mason. Brown equaled her first day with a 2-over 74, playing the final six holes at 1-under.
Bertelsen, the lone senior, finished at 1-over Saturday to remain in the top five individually at 1-under par over two days.
Tech will tee off the final round at 10 a.m. Sunday in the final group alongside Oklahoma State and Baylor.
