Tech Takes 28 Spots On Academic All-Big 12 Teams

Hattie Schunk was one of three Lady Raiders to make the Academic All-Big 12 Team, while sporting a 4.0 GPA.
IRVING, Texas -- The Texas Tech No. 7 men's and No. 10 women's track & field teams combined to place a program-record 28 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Teams, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Of Tech's school-record 28 honorees, 19 were female, and nine were male. The overall total of 28 ranked second in the conference.
On the men's side, six Red Raiders were named to the first team, and three made the second team. Fourteen Lady Raiders earned 14 first team honors, and five made it on to the second team.
Leading the way for the Lady Raiders with 4.0 GPA's, were Montene Speight (Political Science), Hattie Schunk (Chemical Engineering) and Reece Timmons (Human Development & Family Studies).
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Texas Tech track & field will compete at the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Championships this weekend, May 15-17, in Ames, Iowa.
