SAN ANTONIO -- Sarah Brown fired a 1-under par 71 and Gabby Barker carded an even par 72 to lead Texas Tech in the first round of the NCAA San Antonio Regional on Thursday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Tenth-seeded Tech (292) sits at 4-over par and in 11th place following the opening round. The Lady Raiders are just five shots back of sixth-place Texas (287) heading into Friday's second round. Tennessee (276) leads all teams at 12-under, followed by UCLA (278), Baylor (280), Washington and Texas A&M (281).
The top six teams from each of the four regionals advance to the NCAA Championship, May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.
The Lady Raiders went as low as 2-under as a team midway through the round thanks to a strong of birdies by Brown, Barker and Kimmy Hill. Tech, who teed off on No. 10, played holes 13-18 at 5-under par with eight bogeys by its four counting players.
Brown, who sits in a tie for 24th, strung together three birdies on 14, 16 and 18 after bogeys on two of her first three holes. The junior transfer, playing in her first NCAA Division I Regional, then nearly did the same to end the day after birdies on No. 6 and 7 and a par on 8.
Barker, the lone true freshman on the squad, birdied three of six holes on her first nine to get to 2-under before collecting seven pars and two bogeys on the second nine.
Hill birded four holes on her way to a 2-over 74 while Lauren Mason fired a 3-over 75. Senior Stephanie Bertelsen rounded out the scores with a 4-over 76.
Tech will tee off once again on No. 10, Friday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT, and play alongside Oregon (3-over, 291) and Arizona State (8-over 296).
