
Texas Tech Continues Fall with Wednesday Doubleheader

Red Raiders scheduled to host Midland College for a pair of games at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball resumes fall play with a doubleheader against Midland College Wednesday, Nov. 2, starting at 2 p.m. Each of Texas Tech's eight fall exhibitions will take place at Rocky Johnson Field and include free admission.

This marks the fifth and sixth contests of the fall for the Red Raiders, who has outscored its opponents 44-7 and connected on 10 homeruns this fall. In the first four contests, Tech defeated Howard College, 20-5, and Eastern New Mexico, 3-1, before earning a doubleheader sweep of Odessa College by scores of 12-0 and 9-1. Sophomore Jessica Hartwell has had a breakout fall, hitting a team-best .692 with three homeruns along with seven RBI. Senior Susan Welborn isn't far behind, posting a .667 average at the plate with six hits and a team-leading nine RBI.

Midland College finished 43-15 last season including a 21-7 mark in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Tommy Ramos leads the Chaparrals as the head coach, now entering his 18th season. Sophomore outfielder Kiana Broderson-Jones returns after being named to the All-WJCAC First-Team as a freshman last season. Overall, the Chaparrals feature three Texans on their roster compared to 10 Californians and seven Hawaii natives.

Texas Tech squared off against Midland last fall with the Red Raiders taking a 22-1 ten inning win. Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first off a blast from then-freshman Kiani Ramsey. The Red Raider offense exploded for five runs in the third inning, nine in the fifth and six in the eighth to power itself to the victory.

The Red Raiders enter their third year under Gregory. Texas Tech compiled a 23-32 record last season, including a 6-12 mark in Big 12 play. Twelve letterwinners return from last year's squad, headlined by senior outfielder Kierra Miles, who led the Big 12 and set a school record with 17 home runs in 2016 and knocked two out of the park in the last game she played against Howard.

Texas Tech's fall slate concludes with a doubleheader against McClennan Community College Saturday, Nov. 12, followed by the Red Raider World Series Nov. 15-17.
