Warnecke, O’Neal hit home runs on the day as Tech improves to 6-0 this fall.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball improved to 6-0 this fall with a doubleheader sweep of Midland College by scores of 9-0 and 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Freshmen Hannah Broseman and Kassidy Scott combined for seven innings of shutout ball in game one while senior Brittany Warnecke blasted a three-run home run to power the offense. Tech outhit the Chaparrals 11-5 in game two on its way to the victory.
Â
"We did a good job today" head coach Adrian Gregory said. "Hannah started off well in the circle in three innings of work. She showed great disciple and worked through their hitters with good pace. Offensively, we swung well in game one and put up some good numbers. We will continue to work on our base running and playing through all innings of every game, but overall we are in a good place."
Â
As has been the case in three of four games this fall, Tech's offense got out to a fast start in game one with five runs in the first inning. Already leading 2-0, Warnecke sent a three-run shot to left center field to push Tech in front 5-0.
Â
That proved to be more than enough for the Red Raider freshmen in the circle as Broseman allowed just two hits in three innings while striking out three, and Scott gave up just one hit in four innings of work with five strikeouts.
Â
In game two, Midland took a 1-0 lead in the second before Tech responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Chaparrals regained the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs off senior Dominique Alcocer, who was replaced by senior Mattison Maisel in the fourth after giving up three runs on four hits with two stikeouts.
Â
Maisel allowed just one Chaparral hit the remainder of the game as Tech evened the score with a pair of runs in the fifth. Freshman Raina O'Neal connected on the go-ahead two-run home in the bottom of the sixth that gave the Red Raiders the win.
