October 08, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders hang tough in the second and third sets before falling, 0-3.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Texas Tech volleyball put together strong efforts in the second and third sets, but it wasn't enough as No. 6 Kansas dealt the Red Raiders a 25-8, 25-18, 25-18 loss Saturday at Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence.
Â
Jayhawk junior Madison Rigdon connected on a career-high six aces, all in the first set, and Kansas (15-2, 4-1) outhit the Red Raiders (10-10, 0-5) .341 to .120 on their way to the victory. Rigdon finished with nine kills while junior Kelsie Payne posted a match-high 12 kills for the Jayhawks.
Â
"Kansas is an excellent team," Texas Tech head coach Tony Graystone said. "They're a top-10 team for a reason. Their serve got the best of us early on. The first set got away from us, but I was really happy with the second and third sets. To see us play the way we did in those sets was encouraging, and something to build on."
Â
Freshman Toni McDougald and senior Lauren Douglass led the Red Raider attack with six kills each as McDougald hit a season-best .455 (6-1-11) in the contest. Sophomore Kyndal Cowan got the start at setter and tallied a team-high nine assists, while senior Marguerite Grubb came on in the third set to post eight of her own. Defensively, sophomore Reyn Akiu and freshman Maggie Sagers posted nine digs apiece, while Grubb and sophomore Katy Keenan combined for the Red Raiders only block on the night.
Â
The loss is Texas Tech's eighth straight after posting a ten-match win streak in nonconference play.
Â
The Red Raiders overcame a quick 3-0 burst by Kansas to open the match, surging back to take a 6-5 lead. The Jayhawks, however, recovered with seven of the next eight points to claim a 12-7 advantage. Rigdon delivered six aces in the set to help Kansas to a 25-8 first-set win.
Â
Texas Tech started strong in the second set, powering to leads of 7-4 and 9-7. Despite an improved defensive effort by the scarlet and black, Kansas hit .357 for the frame en route to a 25-18 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
In the third set, the Red Raiders again established a lead at 8-7 before Kansas rallied to take a 13-8 lead. The Red Raiders didn't go down without a fight, pulling to within four several times before falling, 25-18.
