Soccer Earns League High 14 Academic All-Big 12 Honors

Four of Tech’s 14 winners were nominated with 4.00 GPAs.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Fourteen Texas Tech soccer student-athletes were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the league announced today.

The total is the most of any school in the conference selected to this year's team. Among the 14, four Red Raiders were nominated with 4.00 GPAs, which also leads among member institutions. The Texas Tech four include: Brooke Denesik, Mary Heiberger, Gwennie Puente and Lauren Watson.

In October, Denesik and Watson were also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Teams.

The other first team members are: Margaret Begley, Cassie Boren, Maddy Crabtree, Meagan McCullough, Rebekah O'Brien, Gabbie Puente, Natalie Schmutz and Carly Wickenheiser. Second team members include: Cassie Conarty and Jordan Duke.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Red Raiders open the Big 12 Soccer Championship against No. 1 West Virginia on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.
