Â
"It was a huge win," head coach Tony Graystone said. "Rice is very good and well coached. This was really good to see us continue to make adjustments throughout the match. I'm really proud of the way we composed ourselves down 13-10 in the fifth. We called our last timeout and came back and fought through it. There's not much more you could ask for in a match early on when you're on the road to try to get ready for conference play."
Â
Texas Tech utilized a balanced scoring attack in the opening frame as four Red Raiders had multiple kills in the set. Tech went on an 8-1 run to turn a 4-4 tie into a 12-5 advantage and maintained a steady lead before taking the set 25-20.
Â
The Rice offense put together a strong second set, hitting .333 and earning a 25-17 set win to even the score at 1-1.

Â
In the fourth set, Texas Tech trailed by as many as nine, but rallied with a 5-1 spurt midway through the set and later pulled to within 21-20. The Owls, however, held on to close the set 25-23.
Â
The Red Raiders gained an early 3 -0 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but Rice would come back to take a 13-10 advantage. After a pair of Owl errors, Texas Tech went to Atwood for three straight kills as the two teams battled to a 16-16 deadlock. A kill by Douglass gave Texas Tech its third match point at 17-16 and Texas Tech came away victorious after a Rice misfire.
