Nilehn Captures Individual Crown At Carmel Cup

MONTEREY, Calif. – The Red Raiders began the 2016-17 golf slate with an individual title and a third-place team finish at The Carmel Cup, which was held at Pebble Beach this weekend.

Fredrik Nilehn, in his Red Raider debut after transferring in from Kennesaw State, was dominant all weekend and polished off the individual win on Sunday with a 5-under 67. Nilehn went 68-67-67 (-14) over the weekend, just one of three players to post three sub-70 rounds and the only player to have two rounds of 67 or better. Nilehn finished the tournament two shots clear of the field.

Nilehn's win is the 19th Tech individual tournament title under head coach Greg Sands.

As a team, the Red Raiders finished in third place at 29-under par, just one shot behind No. 6 Georgia, which took second. The Red Raiders outpaced three teams ranked in Golfstat's top 20 – Vanderbilt (No. 4), Oklahoma (No. 14) and Arkansas (No. 18) this weekend.

"I'm extremely happy with how we competed against some of the best teams in the country," Sands said. "Fredrik was outstanding. He was consistent throughout and deserved to win. There are always spots where we can improve, but this was a great way to start the season."

In total, three Red Raiders finished in the top 20 individually, as Ivan Ramirez (-4) tied for 18th and Federico Zucchetti (-3) tied for 20th.

The Red Raiders' fall schedule continues Oct. 10-11 at the Paintbrush Intercollegiate, which will be held in Denver, Colo.
