Â
Wednesday will be the first meeting between the two programs. It will also be the first time the Lady Raiders have played an opponent from the America East Conference. It is the second time this season Tech has squared off with a foe in a first-ever meeting on a basketball court, as the Lady Raiders pounced on Florida A&M, 82-63, on Nov. 15's Education Day at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
The first half of the six-game home stand got off to a rocky start, but finished well behind back-to-back double-digit victories over Florida A&M (82-63) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (74-47). The other three games before hitting the road for the first time in the 2017-18 campaign include UMass Lowell on Wednesday, then SEC foes No. 19 Texas A&M on Nov. 26 and LSU on Nov. 30.
Â
An opponent the Lady Raiders were familiar with came in the form of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday, as Tech dismantled the Golden Lions with a 74-47 effort to hand UAPB its first loss of the year. The Lady Raiders racked 44 rebounds, while all five starters recorded double-digit scoring efforts.
Â
For the second-straight game, senior Brielle Blaire led the way offensively for Tech, draining 16 points to complete a 34-point weekend on the court. She also pulled down six boards, dished out four assists and had four steals in the game against the Golden Lions.
Â
Joining Blaire with double-digit point totals was senior Dayo Olabode (15), sophomore Brittany Brewer (12), junior Recee' Caldwell (11) and senior Jada Terry (10). Olabode & Terry came one board away from earning their first double-doubles of the season. Blaire is the only Lady Raider so far to achieve the feat, doing so against Florida A&M on Nov. 15 (18 points & 11 rebounds).
Â
The last time the Lady Raiders had five players with double-digit point totals came last season against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 29, 2016, in an 85-43 rout of the Panthers. The last time the Lady Raiders' starting five did so was in Big 12 action against Baylor on January 18, 2012, in a 72-64 loss to the Lady Bears in Lubbock.
Â
Brewer and Olabode have drained 10 or more points in all three games so far this season, both racking up performances 10, 12 & 15 points to total 37 so far this year.
Â
UMass Lowell comes to Lubbock with a 1-3 record, picking up a 77-70 win over Columbia on Nov. 15 at home, but falling by two points in its most recent game at Longwood, 84-82. Wednesday's matchup will be the River Hawks' third road matchup of the year.
Â
Paula Lopez leads the charge offensively for the River Hawks, averaging 16.8 points per game. Two other River Hawks average more than 10 points per contest in Kayla Gibbs (12.0) and Brianna Rudolph (11.3), with Gibbs pulling down the most rebounds this season at 37, with a clip of 9.3 per game.
Â
With another game under their belt, the Lady Raiders continue to lead the Big 12 in fewest fouls per game (10.3) and fewest total fouls (31), remaining disciplined during the flow of the game. Their average continues to rank second in the NCAA, as they've closed the gap on Iowa, who leads at 9.8 per contest. Tech's 31 overall fouls sits at 13th in the country, up nine spots from last week's spot.
Â
Individually, Caldwell continues to lead the conference in assists per game, dishing out 7.7 per contest. Her marks rank her inside the top 15 at 14th in the NCAA through three games.
Â
After a date with the River Hawks, the Lady Raiders host their first ranked opponent of the season in No. 19 Texas A&M on Sunday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. on FSSW.
