Texas Tech shoots the low round of the day on Sunday to wrap up the tournament
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 5 Texas Tech men's golf team shot the low round of the day on Sunday at The Classic Club to finish third overall at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The Red Raiders shot an eight-under 280, one of just four teams to go under-par on Sunday. Tech was led by Hannes Ronneblad, who after a pair of over-par rounds to begin the weekend, shot a bogey-free 68 to finish one-under for the tournament, tied for 14th.
Ronneblad was one of four Red Raiders to finish in the individual top 20, led by Federico Zucchetti and Hurly Long, who tied for fifth place at -4. Long carded three birdies in the final six holes Sunday to polish off a three-under 69. Sandy Scott shot a three-over 75, but thanks to a hot start to the weekend, he finished tied for 17th at even par. This marked the second-straight top-five finish for Zucchetti.
Although the Red Raiders had the best round of the day, they started the round 16 shots behind No. 10 Oregon, who won the event at 26-under par.
"I'm really proud of the way we played today," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "To finish with the low round of the day bodes well going into our next tournament starting tomorrow. I can't say enough about Federico Zucchetti's consistency, the way Hurly Long finished or Hannes Ronneblad bouncing back big-time with a 68 today. We took care of ourselves today and most times you'll see success doing that."
Tech will be back in action tomorrow at The Prestige, which will take place at PGA West. The Red Raiders are scheduled to tee off at 9:50 a.m. central time, and Fredrik Nilehn is slated to make his return to the lineup. Live scoring will be provided by Golfstat.
