February 28, 2017 | Women's Golf
Lauren Mason fired a 2-under final round Tuesday to lead the Lady Raiders in Houston
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech earned its fourth top-five finish of the season Tuesday as the Lady Raiders closed the Dickson Invitational in fifth place following a 7-over-par 295 final round at The Woodlands Country Club.
Â
The Lady Raiders closed the tournament with an 8-over 872 final card, their second lowest 54-hole score this season. In addition, Tech topped four teams ranked in the top 40 of the Golfweek poll – No. 22 Oklahoma, No. 33 Purdue, No. 37 SMU and No. 38 UNLV.
Â
"Our team fought pretty hard today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "The conditions were tough, and I'm pleased with how they played. They keep hanging in there with some great teams, so I know we are close to really playing well."
Â
Lauren Mason led Tech over the final 18 holes as she fired a 2-under 70 final round to move into a tie for 12th overall at 1-over for the tournament. It was the third top-20 finish of the season for Mason, who recorded a birdie in five of her final 11 holes.
Â
Cara Barker was Tech's top individual performer as her 3-over card placed the sophomore in sole possession of 11th place, the highest finish of her career. Barker, who opened the tournament with a career low 4-under round Monday, had previously tied for 15th at the 2015 Ptarmigan Ram Classic for her other top-20 finish.
Â
Gabby Barker and Sofia Garcia added Tech's two other final-round scores with a 2-over card from Barker and a 4-over day from Garcia. Barker closed the tournament in a tie for 33rd overall at 6-over for the tournament while Garcia was a stroke back of her in a tie for 35th individually.
Â
Mami Yamamoto chipped in a 6-over round to end the tournament at 8-overall and in a tie for 40th place. Emma Ballard, who was playing as an individual, closed the event with a 9-over card that moved her to 14-over for the tournament and in a tie for 62nd overall.
Â
No. 2 Florida State continued its dominance to claim the team title after recording a 1-over final round that pushed the Seminoles' lead to 24 strokes over second-place Kent State. TCU wrapped the tournament in third place while Texas A&M was in fourth, just three strokes ahead of Tech.
Â
The 29th-ranked Lady Raiders will host their second home event of the season this Sunday as Tech will face No. 21 Texas over 18 holes of match play at The Rawls Course. Play is set to begin around 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be looking to return to The Rawls Course again May 8-10 for the NCAA Lubbock Regional hosted by Texas Tech. The three-day tournament will bring in 18 teams and six individuals from across the country that will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
