Mami Yamamoto led the Lady Raiders with a career low 5-under card Sunday in win over Texas
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech collected its second dual match victory over a top-25 opponent already this spring Sunday as the Lady Raiders topped No. 21 Texas over 18 holes of stroke play at The Rawls Course.
Â
The 28th-ranked Lady Raiders, who previously opened their spring slate with a similar dual match win over then-No. 13 Purdue, defeated the Longhorns by six strokes thanks in part to a career low 5-under-par 67 round from Mami Yamamoto.
Â
"We played great today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "I'm so happy for the team to get the win and for Mami to have her lowest tournament round. They have worked hard and it really showed today."
Â
Yamamoto topped her previous low 18-hole mark by a single stroke en route to leading the Lady Raiders to a 2-under 286 card. Both schools used a six-player lineup for the match with the top four scores contributing to the team totals.
Â
In addition to Yamamoto, Gabby Barker also fired an under-par round with a 1-under 71 that was the third-lowest score of the day. Texas' Haley Mills recorded a 2-under card to finish second individually while Sophia Schubert was even-par for a fourth-place showing.
Â
Sofia Garcia added a 1-over 73 to finish fifth overall while Lauren Mason chipped in Tech's final contributing score with a 3-over card. Mason closed the day in a three-way tie for sixth place along with Texas' Julia Beck and Emilee Hoffman.
Â
Emma Ballard added a 7-over card while Cara Barker was 8-over to complete Tech's day which served as an extra opportunity to play in a competitive setting at The Rawls Course, the host of the NCAA Lubbock Regional this May.
Â
"We'd really like to say thanks to everyone who came out and watched today," Robertson said. "It was great to have a crowd and that means a lot to our staff and players to have that kind of support."
Â
Texas Tech will host the NCAA Lubbock Regional on May 8-10 at The Rawls Course. The three-day tournament will bring in 18 of the nation's top teams as well as six individuals who will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Â
The Lady Raiders will look to solidify their spot in the field over the next two months as Tech will participate in three tournaments leading up to the Big 12 Championships, which will be held April 21-23 in San Antonio.
Â
Tech will next travel to the Briar's Creek Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina on March 20-21 before taking part in the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate on March 27-28 in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Lady Raiders' final event prior to the conference tournament will be at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, California.
