In 2016, the Red Raiders posted a 19-5 conference record en route to the program's first Big 12 championship under head coach Tim Tadlock. It was the fifth conference title in school history, claiming championships in 1998 (Big 12 Tournament), 1997 (Big 12 Regular Season) and 1995 (Southwest Conference Regular Season & Tournament).
Â
Tech claimed every conference series except for one last year, sweeping four of the eight matchups. It tied with the 2001 squad for the second-most Big 12 wins in school history, trailing the 1997 conference champs with 23 victories. Tadlock is 55-41 overall against conference foes.
Â
The Red Raiders enter league action with a 14-4 record after going 9-1 in February and opening the month of March with a 5-3 record. Tech kicked off the month with three-straight wins over top-10 teams in No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 2 LSU and No. 4 Arizona. Tech also took two of three from UTSA last weekend. February was highlighted by sweeps over California and Western Illinois, as well as midweek wins over New Mexico & New Mexico State, and a weekend split with Mississippi State in Starkville.
Â
Only one conference opponent took two games from the Red Raiders during last year's regular season, as the Longhorns picked up victories in games two and three of the weekend series in 2016. This year, Texas are 13-6 entering Big 12 play, winning their last six games, all coming in Austin, to boast an 11-3 home record with the Red Raiders coming into town.

Â
Texas' weekend rotation will consist of three right-handers in: sophomore Nolan Kingham, redshirt junior Morgan Cooper and freshman Blair Henley. The trio has combined for a 6-2 record, with 62 strikeouts and 25 walks, giving up 17 runs. On the other side of the ball, Kacy Clemens leads the Longhorns with a .365 batting average, racking up 23 hits and 21 runs, while driving in 14 RBI.
Â
Tech opened the week with a tough 5-1 loss against UT-Arlington (9-8) at Globe Life Park on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders were held to just two hits for the second time this season, one an RBI single from junior infielder Michael Davis and the other a triple from freshman catcher Michael Berglund, both with two outs in their respective innings.
Â
It was the fourth game Tech had played at a Major League ballpark this season, as the Red Raiders began March with at Minute Maid Park in Houston at the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. Friday night's conference opener will be the fifth game Tech has played against a ranked opponent this season. The Red Raiders squared off with three top-15 teams in Houston in No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 2 LSU. Tech followed by hosting then-No. 4 Arizona the next Tuesday, trouncing the Wildcats, 13-1, to take a 3-1 record against nationally-ranked foes into this weekend's series.
Â
