March 18, 2017 | Track and Field
Texas Tech finishes the two-day meet with a total of 29 top-three finishes.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Red Raiders concluded their first outdoor meet of the season this afternoon in San Antonio with 25 top-three finishes on the day.
"I thought this was a really good weekend where our kids got to bond and get some good training in," Head Coach, Wes Kittley said. "This weekend created some good opportunities for kids who haven't been able to compete since the Big 12 Championship to step up and start the season off right."
The women's 4x100 relay (I'Shunique Hamilton, Marika Brown, Tiffani Johnson and Sara Limp) ran an impressive 44.63 run to set a new meet record. This time beats last year's top relay mark of 45.09 set at the Michael Johnson Classic as well as the 44.74 relay time at the Wes Kittley Invitational in 2015.
Happiness Okeke and Marcus Franklin claimed the No. 3 spots in the women's and men's discus. Okeke threw a 49.43m/162-2 mark to start off the season. Franklin had a best throw of 50.71m/166-4 to secure his finish.
Drew McMichael took first place in the men's pole vault with his clearance of 5.15m/16-10.75 with teammate Hunter Carlton in second at a height of 4.80m/15-9.
A personal-best mark of 6.02m/19-9 in the long jump allowed Kaylee Hinton the first place spot. Ivy Walker and Amani Nesmith were close behind tied for third at 5.77m/18-11.25.
Caleb Richmond pushed for a personal record in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Richmond clocked a 51.96 run for second place overall.
Senior Jocelyn Caro snagged the women's 1500m title with her personal-best time of 4:31.94.
A 7.43m/24-.4.50 best jump gave Justin Hall a second place spot in the men's long jump. Following Hall was Erin Lopez in third place with his personal-best 7.05m/23-1.75 jump.
Tiffani Johnson clocked a second-place 100m run of 11.66 that also proved as a personal best.
Next weekend the team will be in Abilene, Texas for the ACU Invitational on March 24-25.
