Junior Gabriela Talaba defeats highest ranked opponent in school history.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Gabriela Talaba led the No. 9 Lady Raiders to a 4-2 victory over No. 15 Baylor as she defeated the highest ranked opponent in school history on Sunday morning.
Texas Tech (16-3, 4-0 Big 12) have won nine straight and one of two Big 12 teams to be undefeated after two weeks of play. The Lady Bears drop to 13-5 on the season, 1-2 in league play. This is the first year the Lady Raiders have defeated Texas and Baylor in Big 12 play in the same season since the Big 12 began.
"I am so proud of the resiliency of this group to come back from a little bit of a deficit there," Head Coach Todd Petty said. "Having Sarah [Dvorak] win that first set to make us only have to comeback in one third set was huge."
"I'm also very proud of Felicity [Maltby] for winning with what she had today. She was a difference maker."
Doubles duo Alba Cortina-Pou and Alex Valenstein opened the match with a 6-3 win over Baylor's Angie Shakhraichuk and Jessica Hinojosa. No. 73 Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Karina Traxler and Theresa Van Zyl on court two.
Baylor battled back to take a 2-1 lead with wins on courts six and three to open singles play. Shakhraichuk defeated Katelyn Jackson, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, to snap her 10-match win streak. Alex Valenstein fell to Rhiann Newborn in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-1), snapping her four-match win streak.
Junior Sarah Dvorak fought to tie the match at 2-2 as she defeated Van Zyl in a tough two-sets (6-4, 6-4).
No. 56 Felicity Maltby gave the Lady Raiders the 3-2 lead with a comeback win over Elizabeth Profit (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) on court two.
After dropping the first set, 6-2, to Shankle, Talaba made the comeback with 6-3, 7-5 wins in sets two and three to clinch the 4-2 win for the Lady Raiders.
"For [Gabriela] to beat one of the most competitive players in the nation with the match on the line was huge," Petty said. "We have leaned on her a lot this season and are very proud of how she's battled."
