Texas Tech sweeps three jump titles on the final day of Texas Relays.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Red Raiders had an outstanding afternoon at the Mike A. Myers Stadium with three first-place finishes and three top-10 school record marks.
"Really good day today," Head Coach Wes Kittley said. "I really like how we competed! Zarriea, Trey and Charles brought us home some championships and I love how we finished off with our 4x400 relays. A very solid day and overall meet."
Charles Brown claimed the No. 2 Texas Tech outdoor long jump record with his 8.14m/26-8.50 jump. This jump also proved as a new lifetime best for Brown allowing him to take the national and conference lead.
Zarriea Willis and Trey Culver swept the high jump wins.
Willis set the tone for the day claiming the first win with her second attempt clearance of 1.80m/5-10.75.
Culver followed with his nation leading 2.24m/7-4.25 final mark. After clearing this bar for the win he went on to take a crack at 2.30m/17-6.50 and came close, but was heartbreakingly unsuccessful.
"Leaving Texas Relays with three individual champions is a remarkable accomplishment for this group," Associate Head Men's Coach James Thomas said. "The winners are easy to recognize, but I was proud of the way so many of our athletes broke performance barriers."
The men's mile relay notched a new No. 5 Texas Tech outdoor record time of 3:03.28 to end the meet. Kyle Collins, Steven Champlin, Charles Jones and Vincent Crisp executed the run to claim third overall.
Maygen Smith, Marika Brown, Sara Limp and Mackenzie Frank ran in the 4x400 invitational heat claiming third-place with their time of 3:35.80.
Early on the day, the 4x100 relays pushed for strong times clocking 39.76 and 44.94 runs.
The men's fourth-place finishing relay was composed of Trevin Chambers, Steven Champlin, Kyle Collins and Andrew Hudson.
I'Shunique Hamilton, Marika Brown, Tiffani Johnson and Sara Limp headed the women's relay for eighth place.
Also notching a personal record mark in the men's long jump was freshman Justin Hall who jumped 7.59m/24-11.00 on his sixth jump.
Happiness Okeke and Crystal Onwukaife represented the women's throws today. Okeke claimed fifth with her 48.68m/159-08 throw in the discus while Onwukaife claimed 10th with her 14.56m/47-9.25 shot put mark.
The Red Raiders will continue their outdoor season next week in Tempe, Arizona, at the Sun Angel Classic on April 7-8.
