Lady Raiders to host New Mexico for regular season finale on Thursday
LUBBOCK, Texas – After four successful seasons, senior Lynn Kiro will be honored on Thursday during a Senior Day celebration.
"Lynn has been a great Lady Raider," Head Coach Todd Petty said. "She has lifted this program to new heights. She is a very special player but as a person, she is one of a kind."
The Lady Raiders send Kiro out with her first Big 12 Championship during her collegiate career. She has been a part of two Sweet 16 teams and has helped the Lady Raiders to four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
"Lynn means a lot to me and this team. She was the one that helped me get to know how everything works here when I first arrived on campus," junior Gabriela Talaba said. "We are both international students, so she knew what I was going through. She's always been there for me and is a very important part of this team."
Last season, she helped the Lady Raiders to their second Sweet 16 appearance. Kiro and Alex Valenstein became the first doubles team in program history to win the ITA Texas Regional Doubles Championship during the Fall 2015 and advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
During her sophomore campaign, Kiro compiled a 24-9 singles record, a 16-5 mark in dual matches and a 5-1 record in Big 12 action.
Kiro was named to the 2014 All-Big 12 First Team in singles and the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. She broke the school record for consecutive matches won in a season by winning her last 16 matches of the season.
"There is no place I would rather spend my collegiate career than Texas Tech," senior Lynn Kiro said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity and I've made friends and a family for life."
Prior to Tech, Kiro was a very successful junior career. She was ranked No. 1 in South Africa in Under-14 and Under-18 and played in the junior championships at Wimbledon.
She has won five ITF singles titles and a pair of ITF doubles titles including the 2006 South Africa national championship. She also won back-to-back national titles in 2010 and 2011, when she secured the Under-18 national title.
The Lady Raiders are set to host New Mexico for the regular season finale on Thursday. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center. A special ceremony prior to the match will honor lone senior Lynn Kiro on senior day.
