Seniors Lead Way as No. 45 Men's Tennis Dumps No. 4 Baylor, 4-3
April 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders improve to 2-0 on Senior Night matches under head coach Brett Masi.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura had a Senior Night to remember and vaulted the No. 45 Texas Tech men's tennis team a hard-fought 4-3 triumph over No. 4 Baylor Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Cailleau and DiLaura set the tone and clinched the doubles point with a win at the No. 2 position. The pair also battled to singles victories on courts one and five with DiLaura taking home a winner-take-all third set tiebreaker by a 10-8 margin to clinch the win.
The Red Raiders (11-14, 1-4 Big 12) have won both of their Senior Night matches and improve to 4-0 versus Baylor (21-6, 2-3 Big 12) under second-year head coach Brett Masi. The two teams will meet again in Thursday's first round at the 2017 Big 12 Championships.
"It's kind of a nice storybook ending especially for the seniors to win in their final home match against the No. 4 ranked team," Masi said. "I've been telling the guys all year, it's about believing and coming through in one of these types of matches. We started out really well, played doubles really well, and put ourselves in a great position all the way throughout singles. I know Connor and Bjorn probably wish they would've been able to close those out, but they put us in a position to win. I'm just very happy for the guys that they finally could come through. We've been knocking at the door in a lot of them. I've known all along this is a very good team, a deserving team and I'm just glad for them that they came through today."
All square at 3-3, DiLaura started the third set breaker with four quick points for the Red Raiders. However, Baylor's Constantin Frantzen rallied with six of the next eight points to knot the score at 6-6.
Frantzen had a pair of match point opportunities at 7-6 and 8-7, but DiLaura dug deep to reel off the last three points to take the 10-8 decision. He benefited on a net cord during his backhand service return winner on match point.
"I think the whole match was like that third-set breaker," Masi said. "We had the lead early and then they fought back. I'm very happy for Carlos to stick with it because he had the lead during the tie breaker, and the guy fought back. He didn't hang his head. He played a very good point there at 7-6 when he came forward and did what he was supposed to do to win the match. He played the game plan and executed it perfectly."
"It's a very special day especially for me and for Jolan," DiLaura said. "Our families were here, and the crowd was fantastic. The whole match was up and down, and it came down to who wanted it more at the end."
"To finally have a Big 12 win is pretty big for us," Cailleau said. "At home and on Senior Night is the perfect win. We had to deal with some adversity and come back to win this match. Carlos did a great job, and I'm so happy for him. Everything went our way today
Texas Tech claimed the doubles point on the strength of victories on courts two and three.
After holding serve during the opening seven games, Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya captured a break versus Johannes Schretter and Tyler Stayer on the No. 3 line. The duo closed out the 6-3 decision when a Cobb serve set up a Sendegeya volley at the net.
Cailleau and DiLaura grabbed a break to surge ahead 3-1 when DiLaura executed off an overhead on a deuce point at the No. 2 slot. DiLaura protected the break with a strong serve and volley play to make it 5-3.
Up 5-4 and 40-30, Cailleau ripped an ace up the T to lock down the 6-4 triumph over Frantzen and Max Tchoutakian.
When doubles action was stopped, No. 16 Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson of Texas Tech faced a 5-4 deficit but were on-serve against No. 17 Juan Benitez and Will Little of Baylor at the top of the lineup.
The Red Raiders stretched its lead to 3-0 when Cobb and Cailleau posted straight-set wins. Cobb dismissed Stayer by a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline whereas No. 30 Cailleau grinded out a 6-4, 6-4 battle over No. 13 Benitez.
"It takes a team to win four points, and we did that today," Masi said. "It's great for those guys to come through help out those guys on courts one through four. Jackson has really shown improvement throughout the entire year. I'm really happy for him. He's gotten some experience and some success tonight. For all these guys, it takes four points. Jackson put us on the board in singles, and Jolan played an excellent match."
The Bears mounted a comeback behind a trio of three-set wins to draw even at 3-3 on courts two, three and four. No. 43 Tchoutakian picked up 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision over Sendegeya, Little added a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Curry and No. 53 Schretter outlasted No. 85 Thomson by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 margin.
Texas Tech will meet up again with No. 4 Baylor during Thursday's opening round at the 2017 Big 12 Championships. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT from the Headington Family Tennis Center on the University of Oklahoma campus. The match will have live video courtesy of FloTennis.com
