The Red Raiders drop back-to-back games for the first time this season after loss to Lobos
Â
It marks the first time this season the Red Raiders (33-11) have lost back-to-back games, falling in extra innings to Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon, 3-1. The Lobos (24-16-1) put down 16 runs on 15 hits, while holding Tech to just five runs on eight hits in the third contest of the four-game season series.
Â
Sophomore outfielder Cody Farhat & freshman infielder Josh Jung both recorded multi-hit performances, notching two-hit games. It gave Jung the team-lead in multi-knock games this season with 18.
Â
Freshman right-hander John Henry Gonzalez made his third start of the year against the Lobos, but had a rough go, tossing only 2.1 innings in the first game of the road series. Gonzalez allowed eight runs on seven hits, walking six and striking out four to be charged with the loss.
Â
The Lobos got on the board first in the opening frame, plating three runs, all with two outs. New Mexico picked up three-straight free passes via a hit-by-pitch and two walks. With the bases loaded, Collier pushed a two-RBI single to left-center to score the first two runs of the evening. Two more walks forced in another run to make it 3-0.
Â
New Mexico added two more in the next inning, also with two gone in the frame. UNM's Gonzalez hit a sharp single up the middle, then made his way to second via a stolen base. Zoellner followed with a double to right-center to push him across home plate. Another single from Stajduhar scored Zoellner to give the Lobos a 5-0 advantage.
Â
The Red Raiders got one back in the top of the third thanks to a two-out double to left-center field from Jung to make it 5-1. The freshman smacked one into the wind to plate freshman infielder Brian Klein from first, who began the frame with a single to left field.
Â
It marked the 25th-straight game Jung has reached base safely, the first Red Raider to do so since Cory Raley in 2015 (April 2-May 21).
Â
The Lobos put up another three-run spot in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single from Mang, then a two-run double to the right field corner from Gonzalez cleared the bases to give New Mexico an 8-1 lead.
Â
Tech tallied a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-2, also with two gone. Long was hit-by-a-pitch on a full count, then a single from Farhat up the middle put him in scoring position. After stealing third, Long was fulfilled when a grounder from Klein was booted by the charging Lobo shortstop to score him.
Â
Mang recorded his second RBI single of the night in the fifth, driving in Gregory who put a one-out knock into right field earlier in the inning. In the sixth, Collier placed a double down the left field line to score Stajduhar to make it 10-2.
Â
The Red Raiders cut into the lead with a three-run homer from freshman outfielder Grant Little to pull the score to 10-5. It was the first collegiate dinger for the Midland native, who plated Farhat & Klein, who appeared on base behind a leadoff double & HBP, respectively.
Â
New Mexico put up six runs in the bottom of the eighth to push its lead to 16-5. A double from a pinch-hitting Herrera scored Stajduhar, then a strikeout-wild pitch combo allowed Collier to cross home. Herrera & Watari would be driven in behind a triple from Gregory, while Gonzalez followed with a single to right field with the bases loaded & a sacrifice fly from Zoellner to complete the six-run eighth.
Â
The Red Raiders and the Lobos return to Santa Ana Field for the season finale on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. CDT.
