Mahomes Heads to Kansas City with No. 10 Overall Pick

Patrick Mahomes II becomes the first Red Raider quarterback to be selected in first round of NFL Draft
LUBBOCK, Texas – Patrick Mahomes II's dream of one day reaching the NFL came true Thursday night as the Texas Tech quarterback was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 10 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Chiefs made a leap up the draft board to select Mahomes, reportedly trading a first and third round pick this year and a 2018 first rounder to the Buffalo Bills. It marked the first time Kansas City had selected a Red Raider since the late James Hadnot was chosen in the third round of the 1980 draft.

Mahomes, who watched the draft alongside friends and family from his hometown of Tyler, Texas, becomes the seventh Red Raider to be selected in the opening round, joining an elite group that includes Walter Schlinkmann (1945), Dave Parks (1964), Donny Anderson (1965), Ted Watts (1981), Gabe Rivera (1983) and Michael Crabtree (2009).

The No. 10 pick marks the highest a Red Raider has been selected since Crabtree was picked at the same point of the 2009 draft. Only two other Red Raiders have been chosen higher as former Tech All-American and NFL Pro Bowl player Dave Parks was the top pick of the 1964 draft by San Francisco while fellow All-American Donny Anderson was selected seventh a year later.

In addition, Mahomes becomes the first Red Raider signal caller to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft and the 11th quarterback overall to have his name called. He joins the likes of B.J. Symons (2003), his head coach Kliff Kingsbury (2002), Billy Joe Tolliver (1989), Ron Reeves (1982), Tommy Duniven (1977), Joe Barnes (1974), Ken Talkington (1960), Floyd Dellinger (1958), Bob Witucki (1958), Don Williams (1957).

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Mahomes is just the third quarterback taken in the first round by the Chiefs during the "Common Draft Era" as he joins the likes of Steve Fuller (1979) and Todd Blackledge (1983). He is the fourth Red Raider all-time to be picked by the organization, joining Hadnot, Thomas Howard (1977) and Charley Evans (1970).

The Chiefs' selection gives the organization the nation's leader in total offense the past two seasons. Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards and recorded 12,097 yards of total offense over the last three seasons, both of which rank third all-time among Tech quarterbacks. He accounted for 115 of Tech's touchdowns during that span, 93 of which that came through the air and another 22 on the ground.

Mahomes became the 12th quarterback in NCAA FBS history to pass for 5,000 yards in a season in 2016 where he did it in just 12 games. He is one of three signal callers all-time to reach 5,000 yards of total offense twice in a career as well.

His success on the field led to national attention as Mahomes was the winner of the 2016 Sammy Baugh Trophy and was a finalist for the Manning, Davey O'Brien and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards. Mahomes was also recognized for his work in the classroom as a second team Academic All-American, making him just the 10th Red Raider all-time to claim the prestigious accolade.
