No. 42 Men's Tennis Bested by No. 8 Oklahoma State
April 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 42 Texas Tech men's tennis team was handed a 4-1 defeat by No. 8 Oklahoma State in its Big 12 opener Friday at McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (9-11, 0-1 Big 12) had their season's best three-match winning streak come to a close whereas the Cowboys (19-4, 2-1 Big 12) won their second straight in the series.
"We can't hang our heads because we had opportunities," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "In doubles, we had a chance to serve it out on court one and didn't get it done. At 4-4 on three, we had a couple of break points and an easy volley and didn't get it done. I think if we are going to beat teams like Oklahoma State, we have to come up with those things. We didn't, and they did. It put us in a hole. We had to be perfect from there on out especially when they have a solid team through the lineup. It puts a lot of stress on the rest of the lineup. Jolan came up with a good win today. I'm happy for him. He stayed pretty solid, but they were too good in a few areas that we couldn't rebound from."
Oklahoma State came away with the doubles point and the 1-0 advantage with victories on courts one and two.
The Cowboys duo of Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza took advantage of an early break and fended off Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura by a 6-3 scoreline at the No. 2 position.
In a battle of Top 20 doubles pairs at the top of the lineup, Texas Tech's Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson snatched a break and a 3-2 edge courtesy of back-to-back double faults against Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe. The Red Raiders backed up the break on Curry's serve and went up 4-2 when Thomson executed an overhead at the net.
Texas Tech had a chance to close out the match ahead 5-4, but Curry's serve-and-volley play down 30-40 went into the net to even the tally. The matchup would be decided in a tiebreaker where Oklahoma State raced out to a 5-1 lead. The Red Raiders battled back to 6-5, but Kadhe provided an ace on a second serve to tuck away the 7-5 decision.
When play was stopped, Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya were on-serve at 5-6 versus Tristan Meraut and Lukas Finzelberg in the No. 3 slot.
Oklahoma State extended its lead to 2-0 courtesy of No. 75 Finzelberg with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Cobb at the No. 6 position.
The Red Raiders got the scoreboard when No. 35 Cailleau dialed up a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over No. 27 Cash on the No. 1 singles line. He won the closing three games of the opening set and the final two games of set two to secure the victory.
Oklahoma State answered with straight set decisions on courts four and five to cap the 4-1 decision. Meraut dismissed Pyry Hyrkkonen by a 6-1, 6-4 margin, while Artur Dubinski snuck out a tightly-contested 6-4, 7-5 victory over Sendegeya.
Unfinished matches included Thomson and Kadhe who were locked on-serve in a deciding third set at 6-3, 1-6, 3-2 in the No. 2 spot. On court three, Curry trailed Gerch by a 6-3, 6-5 score line.
"Season's not over. We have to have a short term memory, bounce back and beat a good Oklahoma team on Sunday," Masi said. "It's the same thing we've been saying all along. We can't look too far ahead. We can't focus too along after a good win and not worry about a tough loss for too long. We'll come back tomorrow, hit some balls, stay loose and get ready to play on Sunday."
Texas Tech concludes Big 12 opening with a matchup against No. 16 Oklahoma. Sunday's first serve has been pushed back to a 6 p.m. CT from the McLeod Tennis Center. Admission is free with free pizza while supplies last at all home matches.
