No. 4 Tech Clinches Series Over KU With 16-4 Rout

It was the 16th time this season the Red Raiders have scored 10 or more runs in a game
Â
The Red Raiders (41-13, 15-8) scored four runs or more runs in three different innings to storm through the Jayhawks (29-25, 11-12) in game two of the weekend set. It was the 16th time this season Tech has scored 10 or more runs in a game and sixth time with 15 or more.
Â
The hit parade featured 16 knocks from seven different Red Raiders, including four with multi-hit bids. Sophomore outfielder Cody Farhat became the fourth Red Raider to come one hit away from the cycle, racking up four hits in Friday's contest, which matched a career-high. Freshman infielder Josh Jung tallied three hits, while driving in a career-best four RBI. It was the 21st time this season Jung has had a multi-hit performance, tying senior Hunter Hargrove for the team-lead.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Shetter was electric on the mound for the Red Raiders in his 13th start of the year. The Friendswood native tossed a career-high 7.0 innings against the Jayhawks, throwing down 11 strikeouts, also a career-best, while giving up just one run on three hits. It was the second time this season he's rung up 10 or more hitters, dating back to Feb. 25 against Cal.
Â
Over the second-through-seventh innings, Shetter sat down 17 consecutive Jayhawks.
Â
For the third-straight game, the Red Raiders put the first run on the board, doing so in the first inning on a single from Jung. His hit brought in Gardner, who reached on a walk and moved up a bag on a wild pitch.
Â
Kansas would get the run back in the following frame after Groshans tripled, then scored on a wild pitch to even the game. It would be the last time Friday night's contest would be tied.
Â
After two scoreless frames, the Red Raiders put up a pair of crooked numbers in three of the next four innings, scoring at least a run in all four, to open the floodgates. Farhat kicked off the fifth by battling to earn a leadoff single. A double from freshman outfielder Grant Little that went off the top of the third baseman's glove and trickled out into the outfielder easily scored Farhat to break the tie.
Â
Two batters later, Jung uncorked a three-run homer over the right field wall for the 5-1 lead. His fifth homer of the year got out in a hurry and scored Little and junior designated hitter Tanner Gardner, who found his way on after a four-pitch walk. The dinger capped Jung's four-RBI night, the 10th time this year he's produced a multi-RBI performance at the plate.
Â
With one away in the sixth inning, Tech rattled off four-straight hits from freshman catcher Michael Berglund (single), Farhat (double), freshman infielder Brian Klein (double) and Little (double). The quarter essentially traded places with each other while scoring three of the frame's six runs for an 8-1 lead.
Â
After a pitching change and a HBP, Hargrove cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to drive in Little and Gardner for the 10-1 lead. It would be one of two triples the Red Raiders would acquire on Friday, as Farhat added one of his own in the next frame. Both would score after doing so, Hargrove on a wild pitch and Farhat on a sacrifice fly from Klein to make it 12-1.
Â
The Jayhawks found their way across home plate three times in the eighth after being held scoreless in six consecutive frames. A groundout from Sems brought in Kyriacou, while a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single from Consentino and Foyle, respectively, drove in the other two runs.
Â
However, Tech got all three back and tacked on another in the home half of the inning. All four runs came with the bases loaded, as a walk to junior infielder Orlando Garcia scored Jung, a single from senior catcher Kholeton Sanchez brought in Hargrove, another single from Farhat plated Long and a sacrifice fly nudged Garcia home for the 16-4 marker.
Â
The Red Raiders and the Jayhawks will return to action on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. for the series finale at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. A win for Tech would give the Red Raiders a share of the Big 12 regular season title.
