Jolan Cailleau worked his way to a three-set victory over Brandon Holt of Southern Cal.
ATHENS, Ga. – Jolan Cailleau of the Texas Tech men's tennis team dialed up a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 win over Brandon Holt of Southern Cal during Wednesday's Round of 64 at the 2017 NCAA Singles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
Cailleau erased an early service break and reeled off four consecutive games to close out a 7-5 triumph in the first set. He stayed alive and fought off a set point to even the frame at 5-5 on a critical deuce point.
The momentum shifted to Holt in set two who claimed the first four games en route to a 6-1 win. However, Cailleau was able to regroup to begin the deciding third set. He broke at love during the opening game and consolidated the break to go ahead 2-0. The Belgium native saved two break points to make it 3-1 and used an ace at 40-30 to secure a 4-2 advantage. He added an insurance break and another hold to tuck away the 6-2 decision.
The win for Cailleau was his sixth over a fellow Top 30 opponent going back to March 14. He improved to 9-3 during that stretch which started with a three-set victory over Holt during Texas Tech's dual match at USC.
Cailleau advances to face No. 59 Emil Reinberg of Georgia in the Round of 32 on Thursday. Reinberg outlasted the event's No. 7 seed and No. 9 ranked Hugo Di Feo of Ohio State by a 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3 score line.
"Jo did a great job today," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "He fought back in the first set after being down a break. Then, after losing the second set, he played rock solid when it mattered most in the third set. I thought Jo did an excellent job of executing his game plan at a high level. Now, he has the opportunity to play for an All-American spot tomorrow."
Cailleau will be joined by Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson as part of Thursday's action at the 2017 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The pair takes on Virginia Tech's Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard in their Round of 32 matchup.
