The Red Raiders end the weekend totaling 13 qualifying entries to the National Championship.
AUSTIN, Texas – This evening Texas Tech track & field completed the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary meet, passing four more events to advance the National Championship.
The Red Raiders finished the preliminary round with a grand total of 13 entries to send on to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Â
Senior Viershanie Latham finished the triple jump, her second event of the weekend, in fourth-place at a leap of 13.44m/44-1.25. This will be Latham's second trip to nationals this year, yet her first-ever appearance in Eugene.
Returning to Eugene for his 3rd NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships appearance is junior Trey Culver in the men's high jump, after finishing fourth overall. Culver ended the day making 2.18m/7-1.75, one of the four bars cleared in the first attempt, to secure a top-12 spot with no higher attempts. He heads to Eugene coming off of an indoor national title and Big 12 outdoor champion title, both secured during his 2017 season. Â
The 4x400 relays wrapped up the weekend by punching their tickets to Eugene with 3:03.88 and 3:35.09 relays.
The men's quartet, composed of Kyle Collins, Steven Champlin, Charles Jones and Vincent Crisp, claimed third-place in the last heat of the night to automatically qualify for nationals.
The women's relay, headed by Sara Limp, Marika Brown, Taylor Rockwell and Maygen Smith, qualified based on time, allowing them the No. 10 overall spot. This marked the first time a Texas Tech women's relay has qualified since 2014.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set to begin in two weeks, June 7-10, on Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
