Lubbock area speedster becomes the first local product on the roster since 2003.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball head coach Adrian Gregory announced the addition of local standout Marissa Mirabal to the program on Friday.
Â
Mirabal, who starred at Frenship High School in Wolfforth, Texas, becomes the sixth member of Tech's 2017 high school class and represents the first local product on the roster since Cristi Clift in 2003, who also came out of Frenship.
Â
"We are very excited about the addition of Marissa," Gregory said. "She is an extremely quick athlete that will add a definite speed element to our roster. She played right here in Lubbock, and we are so happy at the opportunity to keep local talent."
Â
A two-sport athlete in high school, Mirabal ended her Tiger career with a .348 batting average, .420 on-base percentage and 35 stolen bases. The two-time District 2-6A All-District selection led the Tigers to the area round of the postseason this past year.
Â
Known for her speed, she also lettered for four years in track and field, competing in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay, advancing to the area round in the 1,600 her first three years before becoming a regional qualifier in 2017.
Â
Mirabal is the seventh addition to the Red Raider softball program heading into 2017-18. Gregory signed five high-school prospects in Erin Edmoundson, Kelcy Leach, Claire McKissick, Breanna Russell and Olga Zamarripa and also inked Ragin' Cajun transfer Heaven Burton. Tech's high school signing class was ranked No. 26 in the nation by FloSoftball.com.
