Volleyball Begins Trip West with UTEP Wednesday

Red Raiders take on Miners Wednesday before continuing to Berkeley, Calif., this weekend.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball launches an extended road trip out west with a midweek tilt at UTEP set for Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. CT inside Memorial Gym in El Paso, Texas.

The Red Raiders (1-0) opened the season last weekend with a 3-1 victory at North Texas. Tech was originally slated to play four matches at the Barcelona HBU Classic in Houston, but the event was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey.

The Miners (0-2) are opening their home slate Wednesday after suffering a 3-1 loss to Montana and a 3-0 loss to Tulsa to kick off the season in Denton, Texas. UTEP, which features only two seniors on the squad, is led by 2016 Conference USA All-Freshman selection Macey Austin, a 6-0 outside hitter from Keller, Texas.

Newcomers Emily Hill and Missy Owens stood out for the Red Raiders in their win over the Mean Green. Hill recorded a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs while adding 4 block assists and two services aces. She currently leads the Big 12 in points per set with an average of 5.25 and ranks second in the league in kills per set at 4.25. Owens, meanwhile, tallied 45 assists and is currently second in the Big 12 with an average of 11.25 assists per set.

Returnees Reyn Akiu, Sarah Redding, Chandler Atwood and Katy Keenan also posted solid outings. Akiu had 21 digs and ranks second in the Big 12 in digs per set at 5.25. Redding and Atwood are both top ten in the league in kills per set after pounding 14 and 13, respectively. Keenan was terrific at the net, posting a new career-high with 6.0 blocks.

The two teams has squared off in each of the last two seasons with Tech earning sweeps in both contests. Following Wednesday's matchup, the Red Raiders head to the Golden State for a tournament at Cal (2-1). Tech will take on Eastern Washington (1-2), Dartmouth (0-0) and the Golden Bears Friday-Saturday, Sept. 1-2, at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
