LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore golfer Sofia Garcia begins play Monday afternoon at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championships, which are being held at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, California.
Â
Garcia will be in the 2 p.m. CT grouping Monday alongside fellow amateurs Virginia Elena Carta and Ellen Secor. The 156-player field will play 36 holes over Monday and Tuesday to determine the top-64 entrees who will then advance to the match play portion of the tournament.
Garcia' bid into the U.S. Women's Amateur field came after she claimed medalist honors at a July 11 qualifier held at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston. Garcia cruised to a 6-under-par 66 round that was three strokes better than second-place finisher Gurleen Kaur, earning her a quick entry into this week's tournament.
Â
The qualifier came not long after Garcia wrapped up an impressive freshman season as a Lady Raider. The Asuncion, Paraguay native led Tech with a 73.6 scoring average, which ranked as the sixth-lowest in program history and the lowest ever for a freshman.
Â
In addition, her play helped push Tech to its third NCAA Championships appearance in school history where Garcia was among the top freshmen, finishing tied for 32nd during a tournament that was dominated by cold, rainy conditions.

FOX Sports 1 will begin coverage of the U.S. Women's Amateur beginning Wednesday night and the round of 64 matches. A full listing of television coverage is provided below.
