September 12, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson are the fourth doubles pair in program history to secure an Oracle/ITA Top 10 fall doubles ranking.
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team earned a trio of Oracle/ITA fall rankings announced Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In doubles, Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson moved up eight spots from their 2017 final mark to a career-high No. 10 ranking. The 2017 All-Big 12 First-Team pair amassed six victories versus fellow ranked opponents and made a run to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championships last season. Curry and Thomson also are is the fourth pair in program history to garner an ITA Top 10 fall ranking. The last tandem to accomplish the feat was former ITA All-Americans Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares who tallied a program-best No. 3 fall ranking in 2015.
Thomson and Curry check in at No. 45 and No. 98, respectively, on the ITA's singles list. Thomson put together a 13-match winning streak to open the spring en route to a 22-7 singles record and his .759 overall winning percentage was good enough for tenth-best in program history. Curry piled up a 23-12 singles mark and notched All-Big 12 Tournament Team nod.
"It's nice for Bjorn and Connor to have recognition heading into this season after what they were able to accomplish last year," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Those guys had a great finish and won a doubles match at the NCAA Tournament. I think that shows and exemplifies why they were ranked inside the top 10. I'm pretty happy for them. Now, it's what do you do with it? If we can use it to our advantage, move forward and improve then I think it makes for an even better situation."
The Red Raiders also will have a quintet of players scheduled to compete at the Saint Francis Health ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa which begins on September 30. Curry and Thomson earned bids to the qualifying singles and main doubles draws, while Tommy Mylnikov and Alex Sendegeya secured spots in the prequalifying singles and qualifying doubles draws. Artem Kapshuk also locked down a spot in the prequalifying singles.
Texas Tech starts its fall campaign with the first of seven fall events at the Midland Invitational located in Midland, Texas this weekend. The three-day tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
