Men's Tennis Notches Six Wins at Cajun Classic
September 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Texas Tech has two doubles teams playing in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team won both of its doubles matches and tacked on four singles victories Friday to open the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus.
Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya along with Connor Curry and Artem Kapshuk ripped off impressive 6-1 doubles triumphs against opponents from Georgia State and Louisiana-Lafayette, respectively. Both doubles pairs advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
The Red Raiders posted a 4-4 singles record on the day with each player securing a win. Kapshuk was impressive in his Texas Tech debut as he dialed up a 6-3, 6-1 against South Florida's Jakub Wojcik. In his quarterfinal matchup, he went the distance with No. 85 Leonardo Telles of Texas before he was handed a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 defeat.
Curry and Sendegeya shook off main draw defeats with straight-set consolation wins versus opponents from Oklahoma State. Curry registered a 7-5, 6-1 win over Maxim Tybar, while Sendegeya dismissed Artur Dubinski by a 7-6 (5), 6-4 score line.
Cobb came away with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Georgia State's Sebastian Acuna before he dropped his quarterfinal match to Nikola Samardzic of LSU by a 7-6 (1), 6-2 decision in flight two action.
"It was a long day for the boys," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Every guy got a taste of victory which is nice, but we have a lot of things we need to iron out if we are going to compete at the level we want to get to. We played solid doubles today so hopefully we can build off of that for tomorrow."
