Volleyball Primed to Host Red Raider Classic

Red Raiders set to close out four-match home stand before next week’s trip to the East Coast.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball continues its home slate this weekend as it welcomes Lamar, UC Riverside and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to United Supermarkets Arena for the Red Raider Classic Friday-Saturday, Sept. 8-9.

The Red Raiders (5-1) open with Lamar (1-2) Friday at noon before a 6 p.m. matchup with UC Riverside (5-1). Tech then closes things out with the Vaqueros of UTRGV (2-1) Saturday at 1 p.m.

All of Tech's matches will be streamed on TexasTech.TV with Geoff Haxton and Mike Moffit on the call. Live stats for all contests will be available at TexasTech.Statbroadcast.com.

Texas Tech will be giving away rally towels to the first 100 fans in attendance at Friday's nightcap against the Highlanders of UC Riverside.

TICKETS
Day passes are being sold for the price of individual game tickets at $5 for adults and $3 for youths. Tickets can be purchased online, at the door, or by calling 806-742-TECH.

Due to construction inside the arena, fans are asked to enter through the northwest entrance. A Reminder that Texas Tech's Clear Bag Policy is in effect for all Red Raider home events in 2017-18.

About Lamar: The Cardinals (1-2) had the Cardinal Classic cancelled last week due to the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. They fell to Clemson in their last outing, 0-3, after defeating Bethune-Cookman, 3-1, for their lone win on the season. Junior outside hitter Murielle Hlavac is the team's top attacker averaging 3.45 kills per set on .380 hitting. Junior Ivette Dim leads the team at the net with 1.18 blocks per set. Texas Tech is 16-14 all-time against Lamar, including a 3-1 win in 2014.

About UC Riverside: The Highlanders (5-1) have picked up wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Drake, Chicago State, San Jose State and Howard to start the season with its lone loss coming in a sweep by Bryant. Ten letterwinners return from a squad that finished 3-13 in the Big West last season, led by junior outside hitter Kaiulani Ahuna's 3.44 kills per set. Tech and UC Irvine are 1-1 against each other all-time, with Tech sweeping the Highlanders in the last meeting in 2013.

About UTRGV: The Vaqueros (2-5) have played three top 25 teams already, suffering losses to No. 21 Ohio State, at No. 10 BYU and at No. 14 Oregon. UTRGV has defeated Northern Illinois and Saint Louis for its two wins. Junior outside Ragni Steen Knudsen leads the attack, averaging 3.75 kills per set on .232 hitting. Knudsen accumulated a match-high 12 kills on .237 hitting against the Red Raiders last season, a match that Tech won 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21).

The Red Raiders opened their home slate with a 3-0 victory over Abilene Christian. Sophomore Chandler Atwood carved out a match-high 12 kills to mark her third time in six games leading the team in kills. Sophomore Emily Hill joined Atwood in double figures as Tech recorded its highest team hitting percentage of the season at .318.

LOOKING AHEAD
After visiting the West Coast last week, the Red Raiders head to the East Coast next week. Tech travels to Athens, Ga., for a midweek battle against the Georgia Bulldogs Wed., Sept. 13, at 6 p.m., before heading up the road for three matches at the Clemson Challenge, where the Red Raiders will battle Clemson, South Carolina and Georgia Southern.
