No. 24 Men's Tennis Posts 5-2 Win at Hawaii
January 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders return home Friday to open a stretch of seven matches over a 10-day span.
HONOLULU, Oahu, Hawaii – The No. 24 Texas Tech men's tennis team finished its opening road trip with a convincing 5-2 win over Hawaii on Wednesday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Red Raiders (2-1) rallied to win the final two doubles decisions and won four of six singles outings to capture their second true road victory on the season.
"I felt like we were a little tired today," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi. "We didn't play our best in a few spots. We got through the doubles and played the key points well there. We need to sharpen up on some small areas individually. Hopefully, we can get those things ironed out this weekend in our next matches. This was an awesome trip overall and one we will never forget as a team. Hawaii is a beautiful place, but we're excited get home to Lubbock and play in-front of our fans."
Texas Tech rattled off a pair of dramatic wins in tiebreakers courtesy of Connor Curry and Matheus Leite along with Artem Kapshuk and Ilgiz Valiev at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Curry and Kapshuk dropped a combined five games between the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to push the Red Raiders ahead 3-0.
The Rainbow Warriors got on the board as Tristan Martins outlasted Leite by a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. Valiev answered right back for the match clincher over UH's Lucas LaBrunie (UH) by a 6-4, 6-2 margin.
Jackson Cobb provided the fifth point for the Red Raiders and rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Fabian Woehrl (UH).
Texas Tech will turn its attention to seven home matches over a 10-day span starting with Midwestern State on Friday at 3 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders also will face UTPB (Jan. 14 – 1 p.m. CT) along with UTSA (Jan. 15 – 12 p.m. CT) and Abilene Christian (Jan. 15 – 3:30 p.m. CT) over the holiday weekend.
