No. 24 Men's Tennis Earns Doubleheader Sweep
January 16, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders have won five in a row and improve to 6-1 on the season.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 24 Texas Tech men's tennis team dialed up a 4-2 win over UTSA and a 4-1 victory versus Abilene Christian indoors at the Falls Athletic Club and Lubbock Country Club on Monday.
The Red Raiders (6-1) extended their winning streak to five straight matches and moved their record to 6-1.
"Doubleheaders in general are usually pretty long and tough," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "To play on two different sites in the time span, it was a pretty tiring afternoon. I challenged the guys a little bit after the doubles (following ACU) and put a little bit of bark in my speech. They responded pretty well winning all four matches one through four in straight sets and not giving up a set. That made me feel pretty good that they were on their toes and ready for that. That was seven matches in seven days so I've got to be mindful of the fact that that takes a lot out of you, and we actually traveled across North America to get from one place to another. Their bodies are probably a little tired. They have a good deserving day off tomorrow."
After winning the doubles point versus UTSA, Connor Curry imposed his will in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gabriel Bugiga to move the tally to 2-0.
The Roadrunners evened the scoreboard at 2-2 as Kai Breitbach knocked off Ilgiz Valiev bya 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 scoreline on court three. Then, Juri Reckow edged out Artem Kapshuk 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 2 singles line.
Matheus Leite vaulted Tech back to a 3-2 edge with a 6-3, 6-3 won over Joao Ceolin in the No. 5 spot. The Red Raiders finished out the 4-2 triumph behind Jackson Cobb who garnered a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 decision over Javier Gonzalez. Cobb took control of the second set breaker at 2-1 with a pair of monster serves.
After dropping the doubles point to ACU, the Red Raiders stormed back for a quartet of singles victories in the top four spots in the lineup. Kapshuk rattled off a 6-3, 6-0 won over Henry Adams on court three.
Then, Liete battled for a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Hunter Holman in the No. 4 spot to put the Red Raiders ahead 2-1. Valiev emerged with a 6-3, 6-4 hard-fought battle to put Texas Tech up 3-1 at the No. 2 position.
Curry provided the clincher with a tightly-contested 7-6 (3), 6-4 matchup over Josh Sheehy at the top of the lineup.
"As a freshman, Matheus this afternoon and not necessarily the match still in question he did a good job coming out and just playing well," Masi said. "He won pretty easily and did the same thing this afternoon. It's good to see our young guys doing a good job and doing well for us honestly."
