Red Raiders open the Betsy Rawls Invitational Friday morning in Austin
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will return to the links Friday morning when the Red Raiders open the Betsy Rawls Invitational held at the UT Golf Club in Austin.
Tech will be one of eight in the 12-team field ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfstat poll as the Red Raiders are No. 38 following a fifth-place finish at the Illini Invitational only a week ago. The field also features No. 1 Alabama, No. 7 Florida, No. 16 Kent State, No. 28 Baylor, No. 40 Colorado, No. 41 Texas A&M, and No. 49 SMU.
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson will use a similar lineup as the one Tech used at Medinah as senior Mami Yamamoto will be joined by sophomores Sofia Garcia and Amy Taylor as well as freshmen Anna Dong and Cecilie Nielsen. Fellow freshman Destiny Arenas will make her collegiate debut as an individual.
Garcia is coming off her best performance of her young Tech career after sharing the Illini Invitational individual title following a 9-under 207 final card. She shared medalist honors with the Kent State duo of Karoline Stormo and Michaela Finn.
Additionally, Mami Yamamoto and teammate Anna Dong tied for 43rd in the competition. Amy Taylor and Cecillie Nielsen both recorded 2-over final rounds, with Nielsen finishing 33rd overall and Taylor finishing in a tie at 71st on the individual leaderboard.
The Red Raiders will have quite a bit of familiarity with the UT Golf Club layout as Yamamoto and Taylor both competed last May in the NCAA Austin Regional. Garcia, meanwhile, wrapped the 2016 Betsy Rawls Invitational in a tie for fifth overall, her first career top-five showing in what was just her second career collegiate event.
Taylor will be the first Red Raider to tee off in Friday's staggered format as she will go off the No. 1 box at 9:30 a.m. alongside Texas Sate and Kent State. Live scoring will be provided throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.
